The Spoil Islands: Melbourne, FL Hidden Gems

The Spoil Islands: Melbourne, FL Hidden Gems

One of the Melbourne, FL hidden gems is known as the Spoil Islands. The islands are spread throughout Brevard, Indian River, and St. Lucie County. Each island is only accessible by boat, and each island has something different to offer.

About the Islands

Camping is allowed on some of the Spoil Islands. However, it’s not available on all of them. Some of them have recreational sites for barbecuing, having picnics, and more. You can pull up to a recreational island on a boat and settle in for a day or night of fun.

The Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves Field Office and several other organizations worked hard to clear out recreational areas for the public. They also removed non-native vegetation and planted new, native vegetation. Additionally, they installed picnic tables and fire rings to some of the islands.

If you have limited mobility, you can still enjoy the islands. There is a wheelchair access ramp as well as some picnic areas with wheelchair accessible tables and fire pits. They are constantly working towards improving the islands.

Rules of the Islands

There are a few things you should know about the islands. Because they are somewhat remote, they are important ecological resources. Nesting birds, endangered plants, and rare species all have homes on the island. It’s important to clean up after yourself.

To get to the island, you can rent or charter a boat. You can stay with us at the Melbourne All Suites Inn and plan your trip to one of the Spoil Islands.
