Melbourne, FL Highlights: Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands
Also known as the Viera Wetlands, the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands is one of the top Melbourne, FL highlights. Find out what makes this area so special and what you might find when you visit it.
What are the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands?
Throughout Brevard County, the Natural Resources Management Office has set aside land for preservation and management. One of the most notable sites is the Ritch Grissom Wetlands.
The site is located between the River Lakes Conservation Area (the Moccasin Island tract) and the Brevard Zoo. Typically, birders, photographers, and other tourists head to the area to view wildlife. There are alligators, sandhill cranes, and many other animals in the wetlands.
Getting to the area can be easily done by car. Therefore, it’s great for those who don’t want to spend all day hiking a difficult trail or coping with the high heat. After a short drive in an air conditioned car, you can find yourself at the site. You can even stay in your car while you look out for animals.
The wetlands is named after a Brevard County employee who worked near the site. In 2008, the site became a part of the Florida Birding Trail. Every year, about 210,000 people go through the entrance of the wetlands.
Events at the Site
The site is also home to many other events. There are workshops, field trips, and tours that take place at the site. At times, there are 5K runs held at the wetlands.
